A prominent computer scientist who has spent 20 years publishing academic papers on cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity has gone incommunicado, had his professor profile, email account, and phone number removed by his employer, Indiana University, and had his homes raided by the FBI. No one knows why.
Xiaofeng Wang has a long list of prestigious titles. He was the associate dean for research at Indiana University's Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, a fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a tenured professor at Indiana University at Bloomington. According to his employer, he has served as principal investigator on research projects totaling nearly $23 million over his 21 years there.
He has also coauthored scores of academic papers on a diverse range of research fields, including cryptography, systems security, and data privacy, including the protection of human genomic data. I have personally spoken to him on three occasions for articles here, here, and here.
“None of This Is in Any Way Normal”
In recent weeks, Wang's email account, phone number, and profile page at the Luddy School were quietly erased by his employer. Over the same time, Indiana University also removed a profile for his wife, Nianli Ma, who was listed as a lead systems analyst and programmer at the university's Library Technologies division.
As reported by The Bloomingtonian and later the The Herald-Times in Bloomington, a small fleet of unmarked cars driven by government agents descended on the Bloomington home of Wang and Ma on Friday. They spent most of the day going in and out of the house and occasionally transferred boxes from their vehicles. TV station WTHR, meanwhile, reported that a second home owned by Wang and Ma, located in Carmel, Indiana, was also searched. The station said that both a resident and an attorney for the resident were on scene during at least part of the search.
Attempts to locate Wang and Ma have so far been unsuccessful. An Indiana University spokesman didn't answer emailed questions asking if the couple was still employed by the university and why their profile pages, email addresses, and phone numbers had been removed. The spokesman provided the contact information for a spokeswoman at the FBI's field office in Indianapolis. In an email, the spokeswoman wrote: “The FBI conducted court authorized law enforcement activity at homes in Bloomington and Carmel Friday. We have no further comment at this time.”
Searches of federal court dockets turned up no documents related to Wang, Ma, or any searches of their residences. The FBI spokeswoman didn't answer questions seeking which US district court issued the warrant and when, and whether either Wang or Ma is being detained by authorities. Justice Department representatives didn't return an email seeking the same information. An email sent to a personal email address belonging to Wang went unanswered at the time this post went live. Their resident status (e.g., US citizens or green card holders) is currently unknown.
Fellow researchers took to social media over the weekend to register their concern over the series of events.
“None of this is in any way normal,” Matthew Green, a professor specializing in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Mastodon. He continued: “Has anyone been in contact? I hear he’s been missing for two weeks and his students can’t reach him. How does this not get noticed for two weeks???”
In the same thread, Matt Blaze, a McDevitt professor of computer science and law at Georgetown University, said, “It's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there. And while there's a process for removing tenured faculty, it takes more than an afternoon to do it.”
Local news outlets reported the agents spent several hours moving boxes in an out of the residences. WTHR provided the following details about the raid on the Carmel home:
Neighbors say the agents announced "FBI, come out!" over a megaphone.
A woman came out of the house holding a phone. A video from a neighbor shows an agent taking that phone from her. She was then questioned in the driveway before agents began searching the home, collecting evidence and taking photos.
A car was pulled out of the garage slightly to allow investigators to access the attic.
The woman left the house before 13News arrived. She returned just after noon accompanied by a lawyer. The group of 10 or so investigators left a few minutes later.
The FBI would not say what they were looking for or who is under investigation. A bureau spokesperson issued a statement: “I can confirm we conducted court-authorized activity at the address in Carmel today. We have no further comment at this time.”
Investigators were at the house for about four hours before leaving with several boxes of evidence. 13News rang the doorbell when the agents were gone. A lawyer representing the family who answered the door told us they're not sure yet what the investigation is about.
This post will be updated if new details become available. Anyone with firsthand knowledge of events involving Wang, Ma, or the investigation into either is encouraged to contact me, preferably over Signal at DanArs.82. The email address is: [email protected].

📚💸 Career + Wealth Analysis 💸📚
One of the most frequent questions astrologers receive from their clients when doing a chart reading is about their career, profession or work.
The labor we do on an everyday basis is essential when it comes to our finances and self fulfillment. It can either be something we enjoy doing that meets all of our needs, or what brings a paycheck yet lacks inner satisfaction.
There are several ways to confirm if the work you are doing is activating your Venus properly, and you may wonder why that planet in particular? Simple! Venus is related to finances, luxury, and comfort. The jobs that align with our Venus sign tend to be the ones that not only fits into our financial needs, but also provides a genuine feeling of contentment.
So, if you want the straight forward answer to “What career/field/job/hobby can help me create wealth and feel joyful about it?” Then Venus is your short answer. Remember that wealth will look differently for everyone since we all have different perceptions of how much money is truly enough to have the lifestyle we dream of.
Look for the Sidereal sign that your Venus falls in, find below the careers or fields related to it, and confirm for yourself the difference in your wealth accumulation once you incorporate it into your life.
Note: please keep in mind that if your Venus is conj, square or opposite a malefic planet/s (Mars, Saturn, Rahu/Ketu), there will be some natural resistance or challenges that you will experience throughout life with work, job, profession, or financial matters. Venus in Virgo, Scorpio, and Capricorn to a degree could also experience similar experiences.
The house where this planet is placed also tells a lot about the way your job manifests in your life (places, people, etc). Now, there are many ways to remediate any negative effects, so no need to be concerned or feel doomed.
There are many advanced Vedic Astrologers who mostly focus on remediation of planets that are in difficult or challenged positions, so take a look at the options available if you ever feel like there's an extra difficulty for you in those matters.

Across the Midwest, inland lakes used to be "dotted with vacation cottages once built for blue-collar workers," said Emily Badger. In 1980, "a great American job" was factory foreman. The role "seldom required a college degree," but foremen were paid much more than the average U.S. worker.
"Many of the roles they supervised were relatively higher-paying then, too: machinists, welders, metal fabricators, and tool and die makers." They could afford a decent quality of life. But in the past 40 years, a massive "reordering" of workers' status has taken place. Today, a factory foreman makes "a shrinking share of what the average American worker does," while other positions, like financial analyst or computer programmer, are "delivering mounting rewards." Even as their inflation-adjusted income has remained relatively flat since 1980, white men without a college degree, who "used to be ahead in the American economy," have now fallen behind other groups. The dwindling "sense of relative standing" felt by these Americans can help explain why perceptions of the economy continue to lag the macroeconomic data. They are frustrated not simply by "lost jobs" and "rising prices" but also by seeing their status decline "in a world that now lifts other kinds of people up."

News of the Day 6/11/25: AI
Paywall free.
More seriously, from the NY Times:
"For Some Recent Graduates, the A.I. Job Apocalypse May Already Be Here" (Paywall Free)
You can see hints of this in the economic data. Unemployment for recent college graduates has jumped to an unusually high 5.8 percent in recent months, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently warned that the employment situation for these workers had “deteriorated noticeably.” Oxford Economics, a research firm that studies labor markets, found that unemployment for recent graduates was heavily concentrated in technical fields like finance and computer science, where A.I. has made faster gains. [...] Using A.I. to automate white-collar jobs has been a dream among executives for years. (I heard them fantasizing about it in Davos back in 2019.) But until recently, the technology simply wasn’t good enough. You could use A.I. to automate some routine back-office tasks — and many companies did — but when it came to the more complex and technical parts of many jobs, A.I. couldn’t hold a candle to humans. That is starting to change, especially in fields, such as software engineering, where there are clear markers of success and failure. (Such as: Does the code work or not?) In these fields, A.I. systems can be trained using a trial-and-error process known as reinforcement learning to perform complex sequences of actions on their own. Eventually, they can become competent at carrying out tasks that would take human workers hours or days to complete.
I've been hearing my whole life how automation was coming for all our jobs. First it was giant robots replacing big burly men on factory assembly lines. Now it seems to be increasingly sophisticated bits of code coming after paper-movers like me. I'm not sure we're there yet, quite, but the NYT piece does make a compelling argument that we're getting close.
The real question is, why is this a bad thing? And the obvious answer is people need to support themselves, and every job cut is one less person who can do that. But what I really mean is, if we can get the outputs we need to live well with one less person having to put in a day's work to get there, what does it say about us that we haven't worked out a way to make that a good thing?
Put another way, how come we haven't worked out a better way to share resources and get everyone what they need to thrive when we honestly don't need as much labor-hours for them to "earn" it as we once did?
I don't have the solution, but if some enterprising progressive politician wants to get on that, they could do worse. I keep hearing how Democrats need bold new ideas directed to helping the working class.

State-backed North Korean hackers have stolen $1.5bn (£1.2bn) of cryptocurrency in the largest heist in history.
Agents from Pyongyang were able to breach the systems of Dubai-based exchange Bybit to steal the digital coin Ether, according to security analysts.
The hackers stole more cryptocurrency in one attack than all the funds stolen by North Korean cyber criminals in 2024, when the rogue state’s cyber attackers made off with around $1.3bn in digital coins, according to cryptocurrency analysts Chainalysis.
The $1.5bn total eclipses the largest known bank theft of all time, when Saddam Hussein stole $1bn from the Iraqi central bank ahead of the Iraq War in 2003.
The record haul comes as Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader, turns to elite units of computer hackers to prop up the Communist dictatorship’s failing economy.
Chainalysis said the attack served as a “stark reminder” of the advanced tactics employed by the country’s hackers. As well as technical skills, North Korean hackers are adept at what is known as “social engineering”: manipulating people to do what they want in order to pave the way for a heist.
This can involve developing relationships with targets over email and digital chats, sometimes over a period of months.
Cyber security experts believe North Korea’s notorious Lazarus Group are the masterminds behind the latest attack. The group has terrorised Western businesses for more than a decade with a series of cyber breaches that have caused billions of dollars in losses.
Elliptic, a cryptocurrency analysis business, said the hacking group was the “most sophisticated and well-resourced launderer of cryptoassets in existence”.
The group is believed to be part of North Korea’s intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau. It has been linked to past attacks including the hack of Sony in 2014, when the group leaked private emails from executives in an attempt to block the release of the comedy film The Interview, which lampooned North Korea’s supreme leader.
Lazarus Group has also been blamed for a near-$1bn heist from a Bangladeshi bank in 2016 and the global Wannacry cyber attack, which knocked hundreds of thousands of computers offline with damaging ransomware, including NHS systems.
While Pyongyang once relied on its elite hacking cadres to conduct espionage or steal trade secrets, increasingly they have been employed as a weapon of economic warfare to bolster the coffers of the heavily sanctioned regime.
“North Korea started using cyber attacks for espionage, stealing R&D and intellectual property,” said Rafe Pilling, of the cyber security company Secureworks. “Subsequently, they have really capitalised on it as a source of revenue.”
A Soviet-style focus on science and technology has created a “whole education pipeline” for future cyber experts, said Mr Pilling. North Korean science prodigies are identified from a young age, before being pushed to compete in international maths and programming competitions.
The country’s hackers are prolific. In 2024, they made off with approximately 61pc of the $2.2bn of cryptocurrency stolen globally, according to Chainalysis. Including last week’s attack, North Korean hackers have stolen upwards of $6bn in cryptocurrency over the last decade.
The thefts offer a substantial boost to the nation’s beleaguered economy and help support its military spending, including its ballistic missile programme. North Korea’s GDP is estimated at just $28bn and it is heavily reliant on agriculture and trade with its main ally, China.
While most members of Lazarus Group are unknown, the US has issued indictments against several North Korean military figures it believes are linked to the group.
North Korea relies on multiple different hacking techniques, ranging from uncovering so-called “zero day” hacks that can break into IT using previously unknown flaws to using fake remote-working contractors to infiltrate US companies.
Cryptocurrency analysis companies including Arkham Intelligence and Elliptic identified Lazarus Group as the likely Bybit hackers. Researchers were able to trace the digital wallets that were used by the hackers to quickly launder their funds, which are recorded on the “blockchain” technology used by the cryptocurrency industry.
Some of the funds moved through wallets believed to be associated with past North Korean hacking attacks. TRM, a cyber security company, said there were “substantial overlaps observed between addresses controlled by the Bybit hackers and those linked to prior North Korean thefts”.
The North Korean hackers were able to steal the huge crypto haul through a multi-layered and long-planned attack, according to Chainalysis. Hackers gained access to Bybit’s internal systems using so-called “phishing” email, which prompted an employee to input their login details to a seemingly legitimate website that was actually compromised.
The hackers were then able to gain access to a so-called “cold wallet” – a supposedly secure cryptocurrency storage device that holds coins offline and away from the internet. When Bybit came to transfer funds from the offline wallet to its online systems, the hackers sabotaged the transfer and stole the funds.
Within minutes the hackers had fed them through a series of other wallets and digital currency exchanges, attempting to obscure their origin by trading them for other coins or passing them through trading houses with no customer checks.
The nature of the cryptocurrency industry, which is virtually unregulated, has made it a haven for cyber attackers to launder funds. Chainalysis said it had worked with exchanges to freeze $40m in funds stolen from Bybit, but far more remained unaccounted for.
North Korea’s hackers are showing no signs of slowing down. According to Chainalysis, its attackers are getting “better and faster at massive exploits”.
North Korea’s cyber prowess allows it to be a “major player even if in the real world they are highly isolated,” Mr Pilling said.
Bybit has said it has “more than enough” assets to cover its losses and insisted the hack was an “isolated incident”.

The fact that Danganronpa is such a contemplative chess-match of a series means that it does often feel like there are missed opportunities floating around for cool action bits.
I feel this especially in Danganronpa 2. I mentioned before, but Akane Owari is a shonen protagonist type of character who never gets to do anything with it. She isn't even involved in the one major plot point that's legitimately a shonen battle: Gundham vs. Nekomaru.
Her skills are awesome, but the nature of the game means they never amount to anything.
Sonia suffers in a similar fashion. She inherits the Four Dark Devas of Destruction after Gundham dies. Sonia, herself, is also highly proficient in military affairs, and given access to a military compound. It feels like this could set up for a really awesome scene of Sonia and the Dark Devas doing... something awesome together.
But there's no space for that in a finale that boils down to a heated philosophical argument.
But I think few characters suffer from the lack of intense action climaxes as much as Junko herself. Because her character potential is through the roof.
Junko's Talent is, secretly, the Ultimate Analyst. She absorbs and processes information at a hyper-accelerated rate. She's able to effortlessly master new skills just from seeing them once as well as psychologically break down a person's entire identity over the span of a short conversation. This is critical to her abilities as a charismatic manipulator. She knows exactly what you're about and exactly which buttons to push.
And she's also the Mastermind of the Killing Game, who has been monitoring every student extensively through her surveillance cameras. Students who are, each of them, profound masters of a particular skill.
This comes up in the form of Alter Ego Junko. Despite knowing so little about computers that she microwaves them when they freeze, Junko was able to build a comprehensive fully-sapient artificial intelligence because she watched Chihiro do it. She is now also the Ultimate Programmer, courtesy of the Killing Game surveillance feed.
That. Is. Terrifying. The implication that Junko can just absorb everyone's Talents through the Killing Game? That's nuts! She can gradually turn herself into Izuru Kamukura as a side effect of her games. Hell, she's already had opportunities to observe Sakura Ogami, the Ultimate Martial Artist, so I wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with her.
This feels like a character with a lot of potential for an incredible action climax. Especially as the number of Talents she imprisons in her Killing Games continues to rise over 53 entries.
And yet, at the same time, it's weirdly appropriate that Kyoko and Makoto wind up being her archnemeses in the first. Makoto's Talent is unquantifiable while Kyoko's is strictly cerebral. Neither of these are things that can be observed. They just. Happen.

Lilah's Letters
Unlike her parents, Lilah is the complete opposite of them. Lilah is a programmer at heart, and started playing on her PC the second she could. She never liked being in the spotlight, but didn't mind doing it for her moms. She always preferred being in her room playing on her computer. Learning new things was another favorite past time. She started to teach herself to fix things on her computer, which gave her the idea to go to University for her Computer Science degree. She tried out for STEM and made it, and has been going to coding classes. She's always been an amazingly smart girl, and her mom, Quinn would say she's just like her grandmother, Sienna and her great-uncle Alan. Her great-uncle Alan went to University for programming but never got his degree. Lilah would like to achieve her main goal of being the first Helm computer analyst.
